How to use mousse.

I used to use mousse when I was in middle school to scrunch my hair but haven't touched it since since it is so crunchy..what is it really used for? I saw people apply it before blowing out hair, why?

It helps to add volume. I think its really just supposed to be applied to the roots not the length. I think a lot of times mousse is like, heat activated or something too.

Some people put it at their roots before blow drying their hair to give it volume  (:
