I think everybody should be free to express him/herself as he/she wishes. I am amazed at how people still feel it is appropriate or even acceptable to give unasked advice on personal style.
That said, maybe you should let them know why it is perfectly fine. Not all of them might be bigots :)

Doesn't bother me one bit but where I live people are so backwards and far from progressive that they will diss anyone who doesn't fit the typical "mold". I'm from a L.A. girl trapped in Northeast Florida so I love seeing variety and a guy in a skirt...oh la-la...especially if I see cute ankles.
