Some hair myths I'd like to address.

Okay ladies and gents, I am NOT singling out a single person or thread, but as a hairstylist I see a lot of things here on beautylish that make me shake my head. I decided to compile a short list of common issues I see in hopes that it will help maybe that next person wanting to start a thread. I also would like to see people start posting knowledgable answers so that original posters are not also lead on by these myths. I am also posting this in the beauty section instead of hair, simply due to the fact that this page gets more action normally. So here we go.

Myth, seeing a piece of hair falling and you're doomed to baldness.

Fact, your hair goes through 3 cycles, it is natural to see 100 strands fall per day. Unless you're seeing bald or extremely thin patches beginning, you need not worry. I'd like to punch Garnier in the face for encouraging this myth.

Myth, you can put a box color over what you've got and you're surely going to get it.

Fact, color will not lift color. This is one of the first things hairdressers learn. Box color really is shady, in the sense if you want to know anything about the formula/etc.you'd have to call the 800 number, and with any like they might be able to tell you. If you're doing a drastic change, you really are better off seeing a stylist. Yes, you can use your $5 box of loreal now, but most salons charge double if not triple for anything they consider color correction.

Myth, you can take pills and make your hair grow.

Fact, the best thing for a hair to grow, is a healthy body to live in. You may actually be giving your body an access of certain vitamins, resulting is the same hair, and expensive urine.

Myth, trimming hair will make it grow.

Fact, your hair grows out of your scalp, not the ends, dears! You need trims to maintain a healthy length. This myth became because if you do not trim your hair, damage will climb up the hair shaft and cause breakage high up. Cut the damage off regularly, and you'll see more length. It does NOT make it grow.

A few other tidbits:

Hair is dead the second it comes out of your scalp. It is hardened protein. Damage is damage. Though yes, conditioners can help seal split ends temporarily and help prevent splits from traveling up, you've bleached your hair 20 times, it's time for a cut. You can condition, condition, and condition, all you want but the damage is done. Going back, hair is dead. Once the integrity of the cuticle is compromised there is nothing to do except mask it.

Natural oil is your best friend. Get a high quality brush to distribute those oils to the ends where they need it.

Okay well I posted a hair question and it was not addressed but since you know. Which shampoo brands are "bad" and which are "better?

I'm not someone that's going to say oh girl all drugstore brands are bad. I say this because like 80% of them are all owned by P&G. What type of hair do you have? I would honestly say as long as you're steering away from sulfates and other harsh ingredients you'll be fine. As far as more of a specific recommendation I'd need to know more about your hairs :)

Well I have thick hair and someone dry. I use l'oreal but I wanted to try philosophy but I heard that brand was bad too.

Great post! I'm tired of people saying that using prenatal vitamins help when they're not pregnant.I've done some brief research on that a while back and from what I gathered, it's the higher levels of hormones that accelerate hair growth not the vitamins themselves...so what's the point in taking them if youre not pregnant?

the dumbest thing I've heard is crushing the pills up and putting it in your shampoo. REALLY?? some other girl on here was saying to use bc in your shampoo...I hope that one was a joke jesus

I always use hair spray for volumeizing my hair. I always need a quiff or something if that sort. Could you please give me a suggestion for another look. My face just looks horrible without all the volume

@Carol. Biotin is another iffy thing. If you don't need any in your diet, it won't make a difference for you. Just the same as any vitamin, your body will flush what it doesn't need. I've not heard of minoxidil & Vichy, sorry!

@Lucy, I haven't seen much about toning but good point.

Red -green
Orange- blue
Yellow-purple.

I'm sorry, but professional or not the idea of crushing pills in shampoo makes me LOL

Thanks a lot Rachel! You have answered my most dreaded fear of going bald! I don't even shed 100 strands in a day.. It would be around 50 when I wash and 20-30 on other days... But it terrified me... Anyway I'm doing all good I can through my diet... :)

THANK YOU for this (iToo am a cosmetologist) and ppl if you want your hair to grow just massage your scalp, it increases blood flow which IS how hair grows (through stimulation)
