Back in that era they would twist their hair and coil it and hold it in place with ribbon. Today without heat you could lose braid it for a similar look or twist sections of your hair and coil it and leave it over night. Depending on your hair type it works well or not so much.

No problem use lots of hair spray to hold the curl if your hair is not naturally curly!

I would say your hair is pretty much the same as the one in the picture, maybe your thinking it looks different because her hair is longer?
