Maybe try dipping them in vinegar each morning so you pull back once you do it absent mindily?

There's this "polish" called No Bite. You put it on and it doesn't flake and it stays I'm forever. It's clear and it's so bad tasting and the taste lingers until you drink something. It helped me a lot.

Clip your nails. Put the little pieces in a ziplock and seal the away for a week. After the week is over, smell them. It worked for my friend.
