Yes it does make it longer if you want it to grow really fast do five or six braids going straight back and always spray down with water and add some type of oil,a plus to this is beautiful curls depending on how long you leave it in.

It prevents damage which I guess you can say helps the growth process. it does nothing to the scalp where the hair grows, but it prevents the damage in the bottom. Just don't make it tight.
