My mon has naturally black hair and has dyed it black continuously thanks to gray hairs, but she wants to change it. Does she need to bleach it? would it be a gradual process? What would we need to do it at home?

I would say so. I'm not a professional but I was told I'd have to bleach out my friend's hair to get a different color. If you're not going much lighter probably just one or two lightenings would be okay. I'm sure you're capable of doing this at home but go to a salon if you want to make sure it goes well.

Well bleaching is an option but you could also get a hair dye like ion brilliance hi lift ash blonde and use that. Most dark hair has orange undertones and the ash would neutralize it and since its so light it would turn out light brown. If that doesn't work for you than you should try bleaching or go to a professional.

It has to be really gradual. I went from blue black to fire engine red and that was the biggest regret of my life my hair was fried for 4 YEARS I had to cut it into a bob! tell her to grow it out and then dye it or gradually dye it brown.

Bleach it or you could put lemon juice in it and go out in the sun it is very gradual but it works.

She would to remove the dye from her hair first wait a week or two and during those weeks deep condition and prepare her hair for the bleaching.

Then she can gradually lighten her hair from brown to (maybe) almost platinum blonde in a month almost two and still have healthy hair by spraying 3% hydrogen peroxide. This is better for the hair because it lightens it slowly but surely and damages the hair very little. If you want more info leave a comment on my profile.

I have several friends with dark brown and black hair, one of them uses clairol, born blonde maxi, and ends up with a color close to mine depending on how long she leaves it on.

If she wants to go lighter I'd just try a hair stripper and then get all over high lights and just keep getting all over high lights this is a sturdy way of lighting the hair and does not do so much damage as just full on head bleach xxx

I'm a professional. Yes, you will need to bleach it for sure. If possible go to a salon and get it done. Bleaching is nasty business and it's not as easy as coloring hair by any means. If not, the L'Oreal quick blue that Talia recommended works very well. We used it in beauty school and it's what I used to get my bangs the very light blonde they are (over a long period of time)

If you're doing it at home I definitely want you to have some tips:

Do NOT apply the bleach to the scalp area first.

Apply it about an inch out from the scalp. After 25 (give or take some) minutes, apply it to the roots. The roots lighten at a much faster pace because of the body heat. Once the roots and the rest of the hair reach about the same color, rinse.

Do not leave the bleach on longer than 45 minutes total.

Keep the bleach covered (you can use a walmart bag) and wet (with developer).

Do NOT use 40 volume developer or higher(I've seen they make 50, but no one wants to be bald, right?) Use either 20 or 30 volume. Nothing higher. Yes, 40 lifts more but when you get into that even the pros can screw someone's hair up sometimes. I've seen people's hair melt because of it and other stuff they did.

Also, do not bleach it more than once every like 3 months until it's the color she wants. I'm saying this because I won't be there to see what it looks like and feels like after it's done and different people's hair handles things differently.

If it doesn't turn out the color she wants at first, you'll want to use an probably an ash color closet to whatever color it is after bleaching on it to even it out.

Finally, do not do this at all if she doesn't or won't use a good shampoo and conditioner and leave in conditioner. She needs to use something sulfate free of salon quality. Like It's a 10, Chi, etc. This is very important. I've done people's hair platinum blonde (over a period of time) and it was healthy when it was done, I used a nice deep conditioner on it, and it wasn't bad feeling or anything... but she went home and used vo5 on it with no conditioner and now she has a bobb because it dried out and broke off.

Sorry, that turned into a book, but bleaching is serious business.

Make a peroxide and baking soda paste and leave it It in your hair for atleast a half hour, then wash it out. Afterwords put apple cider vinegar on your ends to keep them from drying out. I use this remedy all the time and it doesn't dry or damage your hair at all!
