When To Throw Out A Mascara

hey gals
i'm bombing you with questions cause i'm new and i've been building up all these Qs for awhile :D
so this time - i've been using the same mascara twice this week and my eyes got a little sensitive. i can only assume it's because of the mascara. i bought it about 13 months ago. should i throw it already?! i love it! it's tarte's, "lights cameras, lashes", fyi. it's SO good.

It's usually good to throw away mascara about every 4 months give or take some. Some ways to tell if mascara is bad is if it smells funny, is dry or chunky. Especially if it irritates your eyes I suggest that you toss it.

I asked someone who worked at a makeup store, and she told that you should change it every year. So yeah, throw it out. :)

I live by the 3 month rule for mascara & eye liner. I have very sensative eyes so its what has worked best for me.

People say mascaras should be thrown out every 3 months but most mascara packaging says on it they can be thrown out in 6. I usually throw mine out after 6 because frankly I can't afford to buy a ton of mascara just to put it in the trash 3 months later. However, if the mascara gets chunky or starts to smell bad, definitely throw it out!

Yeah, 13 months is a loooong time to have the same mascara. I say every 3-4 months, but you can also tell when it goes bad by checking the consistency of it. If it's clumpy and flaky, it's time for a new bottle.

yeah mascaras should be discarded after 3 months. mine usually dries out after a year or so anyway and i tend to use mine for as long as possible because i've never had a problem with bacteria but it is recommended to not keep mascara for more than three months xx

Drugstore mascaras that utilize tar in them have only about a 1-2 month life after being exposed to oxygen. Higher end mascaras, including natural brands like tarte, get about 2-3 months before the expire. This is ophthamologist suggested. Expired mascara can be very dangerous to the eye so error on the side of caution and follow a 3 month limit.
