Curling iron help!

I use to use a curling wand till it broke so I decided to buy a curling iron.
I know you're suppose to wrap the hair around it but what the purpose of the clip thing. The manual book is all written and no pictures of how to use it.

To hold the hair when your curling it.
you hold the handle open so the clamp is open and wrap your hair around it then close it.
however I sometimes curl my hair around the clamp when I'm in a rush.
there are curling wands without the clamp(:
