Did you bleach before hand? Red is an incredibly hard color to achieve and if you have dark hair it's even harder. In order to get a bright red, you have to make sure you hair doesn't have any pigment to alter the color.

Mmm. I've dyed my hair a hundred times and the bleach I've fallen in love with is PrismLites with 20 volume generic developer. I kept it on my hair for almost 40 minutes and my hair wasn't fried or damaged, it felt the tad bit dry. You don't have to keep it on long to get the bright red, but just enough to be blonde. Also, after using your color, you can use a manic panic in a red of your choice to intensify the color without further damage :)

Oh! I forgot, my sister's a pro colorist and when my hair was red, our favorite was to use PM Shines, as it also wasnt damaging but packed a crazy punch of red :)
