I sometimes rub coconut oil through my hair before shampoo. It can make it way smooth, but too much feels unclean. If you want shiny try pomade. I think the best is to use a limited amount of coconut oil before washing, wash thoroughly, and add leave-on conditioner to fine tune moisture. I have argon oil mixed into my regular conditioner but haven't noticed a huge difference.
