I don't know about a particular lotion but at any hardware store they sell stuff for basically carpenter hands and apparently it works like magic.

Avedas hand relief! it stays on your hands for three washes which is awesome for me being a stylist since my hands are in water a lot! and the tube lasts a long time since you only need a little bit!

Vasline is the best. the heavy one, put it on your hands and wear coton gloves afterwards, and sleep, next day you will see the difference ;)

Another thing I tried and works good is pure org coconut oil, just a tiny but massaged all over hands for like 2 min or whatever and rinse with warm water and pat dry.. Works wonders!

I love using a sugar scrub on my hands and then using any quality lotion/moisturizer. It gets rid of the dead skin and allows the lotion to truly moisturize my hands. It works great on my feet too...the only difference is that after I use the scrub I put Vaseline on and then wear cotton socks.

Aquaphor or Vaseline will soften those mitts for sure. Slather it on, put socks over your (his) hands, then go to sleep. Next morning they should be much better. :)
