Try to stay away from black. Use greys, browns, and pruples. Start light and build up colour.

Start with the lightest shade on the inner corners of your eyes, white looks fabulous. Then move to a little darker color like tan or gold to cover the whole lid. Then get your darkest color like a brown or gray to go in the crease of the eye as well as a little on the lash line. Blend with a brush or your finger. Add some white on your brow bone too

The one thing I always say when someone has problems doing a smokey eye, find out what your eye shape is. Someone who has deep set eyes can do one type a smokey that a hooded eye can't. Once you figure that out then you'll be able to find a youtube video for a smokey eye with your eye shape. Oh and like any eye shadow application always make sure you have the right brushes and blend like the other ladies state.
