Maybe you should try washing them in the washing machine? I did that with mine and was pretty content with result. I wouldn't try this with running shoes or adidas with thicker base (?dunno how to call it, I'm not native american ^^") but those aren't like that so it's ok. And for rubber try the same chemicals you use for cleaning cooker (in my place it's cif, dunno if you know it ;)
