There are certain brands of dye made for doing color over darker hair. Can't think of any off the top of my head since I don't use them (I'm a blonde). Also, colored dyes like those are usually made to lighten your hair as it deposits the color.

Well you can pretty much get a dark shade of blue, by not bleaching, but light blue you have to bleach.. I have brown hair and dye my hair blue and green.. but if you find a way or some else knows, I want to know too lol.

Or you could just use hair chalk. It is messy and time consuming yes but if you do it right you'll get the effect you want. Though it won't be permanent and it won't last very long it's worth it. Since you don't wanna use bleach you must not want to damage your hair much this allows you the color without any damage!(:

You will have to bleach it. colors that lift and deposit color are usually only in natural colors (blonde, Brown, red) and only work on hair that has never had color before.

More than likely you are going to have to lighten the brown to a pale yellow to get a light blue :\

You would have to bleach it it's almost impossible for a dark blue to show up on dark unbleached hair.

I'm a licensed cosmetologist. You would have to lighten your hair to a very light blonde before you could go light blue. I would gradually lighten it every few weeks and deep condition in between. If you don't have experience with using bleach then I would go to a professional salon and have them lighten it for you. Unnatural hair color fades very quickly and there is no such thing as a permanent un natural color yet, so you would have to redo it very often. When I had my lavender colored hair I colored it every week. If you decide to do it then I recommend using manic panic and add conditioner to the color until you get it the shade of blue you want. Manic Panic lasts long. You can buy it at Sallys Beauty Supply.

I have light blue hair and I could only achieve it with a white base... some of my hair is slightly darker (still a SUPER super light blonde though) and it makes a HUGE difference in the color. If its not white but still a super light blonde, it gets murky and muddy... it would never show up on brown. You would also need to tone your bleached white hair with a violet based toner or else the blue would turn a murky green.

Sometimes it'll fade quicker than that depending on how much product you use n how often you wash it, also if you swim a lot chlorine is a death sentence for blue hair lmao
you can actually mix hair dye into your conditioner though if it's not got any ammonia or peroxide in it, dyes your shower blue but it really helps to keep your hair bright lol =]

I had blue hair and absolutely loved it. But I only kept it for a couple of weeks cos I didn't have time for all the maintainance. It also stained EVERYTHING. I woke up to blue pillowcases. If I could find a more low maintainance way I would definitely go blue again.

I originally got my pastel blue through a soap cap method where I mixed 1/2 shampoo with 1/2 blue dye and worked it into my wet (white based, freshly toned) hair for 5-10 minutes. The only thing I do to maintain it is use conditioner that I mixed some blue dye into every 2-3 shampoos. I just mixed a big tupperware container full of it, so maintaining pastel blue hair is actually a lot easier for me than any other color I've had before (other than black)! =)

When someone wanted fire engine red on their dark hair, I had to bleach first for the right tint and now she routinely does hot oil treatments...but I don't see how you can dye dark to light without bleaching first.

You should try Splat, you won't have to dye it unless you want a lighter shade.
