How To Eliminate Brassy Hair?

I'm growing my hair out and no longer dying it so I can have it au natural with some balayage maybe but in the mean time the dye that's left in my hair is very brassy. I've used a purple shampoo but that's more for blonde hair where as mine is light brown. Any suggestions on how I can eliminate the brassy tones to the bottom half of my hair without dyeing it again? Thanks :)

If your hair is dark blonde/light brown and you tone it, there's a possibility it will turn a darker color rather than lighter.

Pressed send too soon lol, rather that toning you could put a small amount of purple hair dye in our conditioner or if your hair is more orange than yellow try blue.
