Okay stay calm. first you have a ton of options. if you don't have treatment (not like you knew you were going to get one) you can dry it out with rubbing alcohol. don't let it get too moist. keep it clean until you buy a treatment or medication. if it gets too moist the bacteria will spread and it will inflame.

It takes time. just be patient and apply as directed for however many times. And whatever you do, don't play with it or touch it!

Is that normal? what causes these

They are small lip blisters/infections. sometimes they get worse before they get better. if it feels hot ice it and then dry it out with alcohol.

Cold sores are the worst! Do NOT touch it as it will make it more inflamed & you'll get more bacteria in it. Keep it as dry as possibly. Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or cotton ball & put it on the infected area. It is going to sting like you wouldn't believe, but that means it's doing its job. Also, this sounds weird but vodka works just as well as rubbing alcohol, so you can use that. The sore will get worse before if gets better. But for future references, as soon as you start feeling a throbbing pain on your lip, immediately put alcohol on it! Oh & abreva is awesome for cold sores, it's pricey, but works awesome! Hope it goes away soon! (:

Believe me, I know how you feel. I used to get them a lot, especially during final exams time, because stress can trigger them. I know you're going to want to cover it up, but don't, it only makes it worse. Typically it takes a week to go away, sometimes more. Just keep putting rubbing alcohol on it, it'll eventually go away (: oh & don't freak out towards the end, it'll start looking like a scab & it sometimes turns green. It'll crack when you smile sometimes too, just so you know. They're so painful, but hopefully it'll go away fast for you!

Just so you know, cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex I virus, not bacteria. This virus is contagious, so don't kiss anyone or touch the sore then touch someone else. To help reduce the inflammation and duration of the outbreak, the over-the-counter medicine Abreva will help. To prevent outbreaks from happening, the prescription Valtrex (generic: Valcyclovir) acts on the nerves where the virus lies dormant. There is no cure for cold sores, unfortunately.

I used to get them every month for years until my doctor prescribed valtrex for me. Now, on the rare occasion that I do get an outbreak, it only lasts a couple days. Oh one more thing: don't share any of your makeup with anyone! That's how I got the virus initially. :(

The blister will start almost like a small burn, as a small liquid filled bubble or cluster of bubbles. Sometimes it will get a white-ish crust as the blister drains and the cluster dries. This will turn into a reddish scab, which will eventually fall off and reveal the pink healed skin underneath. During this process, try not to rub or pick at the outbreak. Rubbing alcohol will help it dry out and scab over faster, and may relieve some of the itching that seems to come with the blisters. Abreva will reduce the inflammation and encourage the skin to heal. Other than that, just keep it clean and try not to put a bunch of stuff (medicines, makeup, or otherwise) on it so that it can breathe and heal.

White is normal, it means it's going to start healing soon. Emily is right though, it's very contagious. I caught the virus from my mom, who caught hers from her aunt who kissed her while she had a cold sore when she was a little girl, she's had them since she was 7. She has one right now as well, luckily she caught it in the very early stage & it's almost gone now (:
