I just use regular craft glitter. It has worked great for me.

They sell all kinds of macro glitter at craft stores, I seem to find the tinier the glitter the better. If you want to get really fancy, MAC and LimeCrime sell multifaceted glitter, each side is a different color. They are awsome for nail art and cosmetic use.

I have every color glitter under the rainbow and I got almost all of it from AC Moore. You can do so much with it and I do ombre with it allllll the time lol. It also comes off a lot easier than glitter polish :)
