Would make up mess up you face in the long run? I was told it does but I'm not sure if its true or not.

Making sure you remove all makeup (gently) washing and moisturizing your face are key for keeping your skin healthy when you where makeup frequently

To put it simple, no. If you take good care of your skin (cleanse, wash, exfoliate, and moisturize) with good products you'll be fine. It also depends on the cosmetics you are using. Pay attention to what ingredients are in your makeup and skin care products.
