There's and ointment called Kanka that helps heal cold sores and it slightly numbs it too so it doesn't hurt as much. You can buy it at drugstores.

A long time ago someone told me to take the supplement lysine. I take it everyday and very rarely get them now (mine seem to be triggered with stress) also as soon as I feel one I use a cold compress which seems to nip it in the bud. ps...I love carmex which also prob. helps

I use abreva if you start putting it on as soon as you feel the tingling it will keep it from getting big. and if you don't bust it it will usually go away within a few days.

I use Abreva immediately once I feel the tingling. I put it on about 5 times a day. Then at night right before I go to bed I put honey on the cold sore and that seems to make t go away within a couple days!

Salt mixed with hygrogen peroxide...and this may sound crazy but nail polish remover helps dry it out fast...it hurts like hell but it works.

Abreva is an over-the-counter ointment that will reduce the inflammation and lessen the severity/duration of the outbreak. Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex I, a virus that lives in the nerves of the skin. The virus has no cure and is very contagious, so don't kiss anyone during an outbreak and avoid touching the sore. I've had the virus for nearly sixteen years, so I've tried everything to deal with it.

Supplements will not have any effect on the outbreak besides perhaps increasing your immune response. Carmex is just a lip balm, I've used it as such for years and never seen any improvement during an outbreak. The only way to truly prevent outbreaks is a prescription antiviral such as Valtrex (or it's generic Valcyclovir). The virus lies dormant far beneath the skin until an outbreak, where the skin will blister and scab not unlike a burn.

Keep it clean, use Abreva if it itches or is sore, and talk to your doctor about taking Valtrex to prevent outbreaks. I start taking it as soon as I feel the tingle/itch, before the blisters, and it stops it from happening.

I have had very serious outbreaks but since I've started taking L-lysine pills I haven't had a break out.

My daughter gets these, weve tried a lot of otc and herbal treatments for her. I have found a med otc called releeve that works wonderfully and clears up fast. its a bit pricey, 20 for a tiny bottle, but it works for her.
