Henna to colour hair?

Sooo I've been using synthetic drug store hair dye for years to keep my hair black, but I'm sick of how fast it fades and how it damages my hair. I can't imagine the damage it will do if I continue to do this for the rest of my life! So I am contemplating trying henna, but am a little weary because I've been told that it is insanely permanent to the point where you cannot dye over it.

Has anyone here tried henna? How was it? Could you colour over it at some point? We're roots obvious when they grew in?

Thanks ladies!

Noooo henna is so permanent that if you try to bleach it out your hair will turn green and pretty much once you do it you have to let your hair grow out and keep cutting until its out :( not a fan at allll.

Natural henna is red so the black henna will have chemicals in it I used the red one before and I couldn't dye my hair till I grew it out

DO NOT USE HENNA. it is the worst thing you can do. go to sallys and pick up some professional black hair color! boxed color is bad too.

Box color is TERRIBLE. That's why it fades and damages your hair. If you can't get it professionally done - do what Megan said. Go to Sally's and buy a tube and 10 volume and color your with that. It's not as harsh as some cheapo box from
Walmart lol.

Also henna isn't really too great of an option either.

Henna is only good if your looking for a red orangy color.

Also heard once using henna than going back to traditional hair dye it breaks your hair. Its very damaging to do one than go back to the other. For this reason alone I do not recommend henna

Your hair will end up orange and its a pain to work with. I'm a cosmetologist and trying to do anything with henna treated hair is difficult. Go to a beauty supply store and purchase a permanent color and mix it with a 20 volume ammonia. Or just go into a salon and have someone that knows what there doing do your hair. :)

I loved it when I used it on mine! The colour was amazing my hair had never been in such good condition!! So shiny! I got mine from lush and it worked wonders and they have lots of colour to chose from including black :)

LOL I don't understand why people are so scared of applying heena. instead they are okay applying synthetic colour which has so many chemicals and ultimately damages the hair fibre.
heena is 100% natural made from heena leaves. yes it does give you reddish tinge but it fades eventually after subsequent washes. and nowadays you also get henna imparting different colour to the hair...black, brown, burgandy.
heena is been used as a natural conditioner since ages. it leaves your hair soft shiny and also reduces the greys.
just be sure to get henna from a proper source or company.
in India we make henna from its leaves at home and apply it by mixing egg.
tip-if you don't want that reddish colour, you can make the henna paste coffee water/tea water.

They have natural black colour too, and while henna is not perfect, it won't damage your hair and it is not poisonous like normal hair colours.

I don't know about you guys but my henna washed out in a few months. I also had naturally light hair and was dying it darker and salon dye washed out too. It's a nice hair color option that won't damage your hair but if you don't like it I cannot be stripped from your hair professionally. You have to wait for it to fade or grow out! Be careful!

Yes my grandma uses it and it really works and is the most natural treatment.
