I really enjoy Real Techniques brushes and I've managed to get most of them because they're so reasonably priced. In my opinion you can't go wrong with there brushes! :)

I'd take RT over Sigma in a heartbeat. I find the quality to be much better and cheaper as well.

Real Techniques is great for the basic brushes you use all the time. I would vote you for sure get the Real Techniques Core Kit, and then start purchasing Sigma based on what Real Tehniques doesn't have specialized brushes such as tapered, flat definer, angled shadow and contour and so on. That way you can get a feel for both brands, while beings able to complete all of your makeup.
I only have 1 Sigma brush at the moment, and I like it a lot, but I could live without it. My Real Techniques brushes (I only need 4 more and I'll own the entire collection) are incredible though. I am very impressed at the quality for the price. They also dried beautifully after washing, and I didn't even use brush guards!
Sigma is wonderful, so I definitely say try to eventually have both brands in your collection, but definitely try the Real Techniques.
The ones I recommend in particular are the contour brush, the expert face, the buffing brush, the powder brush, and the duo fibre set.

RT for foundation, concealer & powders. Love the domed shadow brush & deluxe crease as they are great for so many purposes & quality/price wise RT are hard to beat. Sigma have the edge when it comes to brushes for detailed or extravagant eye work though.

I've never tried sigma but I'm smitten with real techniques. I just got my 2nd set, the starter kit for eyes. I also have the core collection (face brushes) and I use them every day. I plan on buying more as soon as I get paid. I think I'm getting the travel set next :)
