Here is a tip for you, use natural lighting! It truly makes a big difference. Using a flash on your camera will white out areas of your face real bad (and even worse if you have any sort of SPF on), using false lighting from the house tends to leave weird shadows, causes discoloration, and tend to make it hard to tell what exactly the makeup is like (whether it be blending, coloring, and/or shape). If you can't use natural lighting and have to use indoors, use the best lighting you have (restrooms tend to use a certain kind of lightbulb that tends to be better for this than the lightbulbs usually used in the rest of the house). And don't use filters (if you feel you must then use lightly, but remember, we are being asked what we think, if you we see it with a filter it won't be what everyone else is seeing, which could lead to a different outcome, ex: look good on here but not in person)
Also, give a more straight on angle, don't look down with your eyes open and ask how your eye makeup looks, the only thing we will really be able to tell is if you have eyeliner and mascara on, but not even be able to tell how well done.
I know it is hard getting a picture that does justice for how your makeup looks, so take SEVERAL photos, examine them, pick which shows it best, then post. But please, natural lighting (which you still need to try to avoid shadows in) and straight on angels if you want peoples opinions on it, it truly helps a lot. I see too many people not do these two simple things and it is so hard to tell how the makeup truly looks and give good advise.

I agree! The thing that really annoys me is the use of filters. I also hate when I see a pic that is clearly photoshopped to make skin look soft and flawless then you have these girls flipping out saying how beautiful her skin is and asking what foundation was used! And then they say OMG I need to get that foundation!! And the person who posted the pic goes along with it acting like they have the most perfect skin ever... Give me a break. Ha sorry about that rant... I've been seeing a lot of pics like that and it's been getting on my nerves...

Totally agree with you,Victoria!!

AND! If a girl says something about photoshop everyone gets so defensive!!

I completely agree, Victoria. If they showed how the real skin was with the foundation it would save people money, and we could possibly help them find a better one. Plus, this is a site to get help/learn and teach/inform about stuff, them doing the photoshop filter helps absolutely no one, it only 'hurts'. ALso, you're "rant" is perfectly okay with me, I agree with you completely and it very much so goes along with this post, plus I understand the need to rant. The amount of the bad photos lately has been getting on my nerves as well.

Thankyou for this post!! I just hope people actually take the advice lol, I almost never comment on 'hows my make up' coz you can hardly actually see it at all! sometimes I get so tempted to tell them to take a better pic so we can actually give feedback but I always feel like I'll sound bitchy. It winds me up aswell coz most of the replies to these posts are just 'pretty' or 'cute', never real advice or feedback.. it's annoying lol.

I'm so glad someone finally brought this up because I thought I was crazy. The whole filter thing is ridiculous. There are times when I will use a flash so the pigments actually pick up some light. And the majority of the pics I post are professional because I work with a photographer on all my models. But fue daily shots, thanks for calling out the over the top photoshoppers. Very refreshing!

It does frustrate me when I am asked for an opinion and the pictures given are as you described. And, when I show my husband he rolls his eyes. lol. Great advice Brittany. And, yes, ranting is totally fine! =)

Omg and photos of people's nails when they ask about the colour and you can't even see it coz it's too dark or the lights just shit, that really pisses me off =|

Have you ever notice on some of the pics the eye creases are gone? Lol.

Muaha alma I think I just saw the pic your referring too, it made me chuckle =P.

Lol their is a lot of pics that have no creases.I think that's why so many people think they're not apply eye shadows right because it doesn't look like certain pictures and everyone gets discouraged.I like it when people post pics on the talk forum because it shows the actual look but even if it's a little filtered it's ok but if it's extreme it's hard to like something that may not be real.

Amen. Because I really can't tell what color that is on your eyes if you have 5 different filters over yourself. Doesn't work so well.

Hazel, if you asked for/suggested a better picture I don't think it would come off as a bitch, I have done it multiple times lately, and once I do it seems people will agree with me on it. I suggest making suggestions on what to do for a better photo, just so they realize where and why you are having trouble. But yes, people saying "cute" and "pretty" when you can't even tell is super annoying!
I really hope people read this and keep it in mind when taking pictures for peoples opinions on here. I don't really look at nails but I can see how that would be annoying too!
Alma, I agree, a little filter CAN be okay, but there are too many people that go way over what they should, especially for asking advice/opinions on a makeup.

Brittany A.
Yep, Erin. That filter can make what your skin color and make up color is look good together when in reality they don't actually look good together. Or if the Color combos they use work well together.

I'm glad this was posted =] however my pictures are from my phone which had no flash and I have so much trouble because it's not really showing my work well. so the pictures of my eyes don't look that great =\ at least I can be happy because I don't edit my pictures =] lol in the future I want to get a good camera just for my work.

I totally agree with the not shopping photos we post on here that we want to show the genuine makeup just how it is. One thing though, Jacqueline has been trying to teach us all that sunscreen is not the culprit for our skin looking whiter with the flash. There are other factors that do that, but using an HD foundation will clear that problem up as long as you don't use a powder over it that has a shimmer to it.

Tara, actually SPF is a reflector, that is why it works, and though you don't see it with the naked eye it can be part of the problem (you can help prevent it though). Also, HD makeup you only want to do with certain kinds of lighting and film, which most people don't use or it actually reflects a lot, and you have to be more careful with applying it do to the reflection. This is one topic that was hit on pretty hard when I was in school for makeup. One of my teachers actually posted this picture the other day showing a common HD powder mistake... https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/971275_463877117026400_2134941127_n.jpg.

Kaitlyn, having only your phone to work with can definitely suck. I have a camera but it sadly isn't very good so I have started to look into getting a new one, especially since I am trying to build a portfolio.Yay not editing though. Definitely try natural lighting if you haven't, it truly does wonders! I learned exactly how true this is just the other day (I usually play with makeup at night which means no light but the other day I did it earlier)

There was just a new shot of Miley Cyrus with hd powder all around her mouth. C'mon, her makeup artist really should know better!
