Well there's a lot of pale girls who want to get tans and no one really cares as much as when black girls want lighter skin because then all hell breaks loose about self hate AND THIS DOES NOT BY ANY MEANS APPLY TO ME!! I DO NOT BLEACH MY SKIN! I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT BEFORE I GET ANY HATEFUL COMMENTS but my friend and I were talking about it. what's your input on this idea.

Yea its true. I have black friends that would like to be lighter and white friends that wanna be tan. so I understand what you are trying to say.

Everybody's striving for that one cookie cutter mold to fit into I guess. If I look past the comments, I actually appreciate my skin and I like that I appreciate it. I think we should all embrace our diversity. How boring would it be if we were all the same girl?

I can only speak on the black girls wanting to get lighter, nothing else.

There's a lot I can say on this, but a lot of people aren't going to like it or agree with me on this site due to its demographic and I know this now. So if you are offended by anything I say I apologize as that is not my intention. But I you do have a problem I would like it of you respond in a respectful manner at least.

But honestly, its all about white privilege and effects on beauty standards. I'm not going to take the time out to explain what it is (google it or look it up on Tumblr) but it is a thing and it effects literally EVERYONE, no matter what race. Anyway, being a dark skinned black girl you get the 'bad' end of the stick from society. A long time ago white people told us our skin was ugly, our skin was dirty, and a lot of us believed it. This self hate passed down to today, but its not that simple and that's not where it ends. In magazines, TV shows, books, even Google the ideal image of beauty is a white woman or a white man. Now think about it, if you're black, Asian, Hispanic, you have little to no representation in the world of beauty. If your dark skinned or another minority on TV shows you are either unattractive, ghetto (or whatever else your stereotype is), stupid, uneducated, or all of the above. But if you're light skinned (black or otherwise) you're the pretty one, the smart one, etc. This doesn't create a very good image for young girls. As it can cause them to believe that they aren't pretty, or that they aren't good enough, and its because of society. Don't believe me? Go on youtube or google 'being dark skinned in America'. Kelly Rowland has had issues with this, Nicki Manj obviously has, Lil' Kim, and the list goes on. Tumblr is probably another good resource (but people aren't as nice, trust me). The representation thing and having an effect on self esteem doesn't apply for just blacks, but Asians, Hispanics, and lots of other races as well. Lucy Lu has even admitted how much it meant to her being an Asian woman on TV. So...yeah. Anyway, we don't like it and say its self hate because that's what it is, it's society doing what it's always done. As a community we have issues with a lot of things, our skin color being one of them (brown paper bag test anyone?) and its really about trying to help other girls love themselves more. With white girls there is no issue Of society trying to bring them down as they're the ones society has always up plays the most, goes back extensively into that white privilege thing I mentioned before. Not something you ask for or feel guilty about, but you are born with it if you are white or passing and there's no getting rid of it.

Yea my dad always used to tell me that in slave days the light skin people while still treated like slaves were treated a little better than the dark people and it was going to turn us against each other for years to come and it really has

I think it's normal to want what you don't have but it's more important to learn to like what you do have. Also the thing with wanting to be darker is that you just apply a fake tan which doesn't truly alter the skin, however with going lighter you have to use products which bleach the skin and these can leave you with horrible skin pigmentation problems in the long run. I'm a dark olive/tan colour and for years I hated it and wanted to change it but in the end you just have to accept that you're beautiful the way God made you... Plus you can pull off loads of brighter and bolder colours with darker skin so just embrace it :) hope you feel better about it soon.

You're dad is unfortunately correct Adri. But don't worry about other people. You know who you are and what you are, and that's the only important thing.

I think it is just human nature to want what you can't have... :):)

Curly wants to be straight. straight wants to be curly. dark wants to be light. light wants to be dark. AGH people need to learn to accept themselves the way they are.
