Sleeping with braids only works on half long hair when your hair is wet when you braid it. So take a shower, dry your hair a bit with a towel, braid it, maybe use a little hairspray, and the next morning it'll look more wavey. Finnish up with some hair spray after you've taken the braids out in the morning too keep it in model.

And you need to braid the braids tight! If they're too loose it won't really be wavey either.

Damp your hair and wrap them around socks.

Bandana waves! Just damp hair with water in a spray bottle and wrap them around bandanas. Since your hair is thick, you probably want to section it off a few times and have at least 5-10 bandanas. Look up videos to help you!

You can also use a headband curl. get a headband that looks like a giant pony tail hair tie. put it on like a bohemian chick on your forehead and pushed down to your nape. you basically control how big the curl is by how tightly you wrap it around the hair band which is nice. there are tons of no heat curling tutorials on youtube.

After you shower put your hair into two braids and take them out in the morning, works for me.
