Is it true that shaving makes the hair appear darker and more noticeable?

yes!

Appear, yes.

Yes, but it's because the hair naturally grows to a point so it looks lighter but as soon as you shave it, it cuts it flat so it makes it appear darker.

No, that's a huge myth!

Let me clarify. When you first shave and it starts to grow back, it'll look thicker, but not darker. After it grows out more, it'll look the same as it did when you went to shave it the first time.

No. It doesn't grow back darker.

Think of it like this: the hair you have on your arms and legs, without shaving, have endured many things such as weather (heat, cold) and sun. the color and thickness has been dulled out because of this. now when you shave, it comes back looking thicker but its just hair that hasn't been exposed to these aspects yet, get it?

Your hair doesn't grow in a straight line. It has a thick base and tapers off into a point at the end like an upside down V. Since it tapers to a point, the hair looks thinner and lighter at the ends. When you shave and it starts to grow back you're seeing the thick base that's coming back, which is why it looks thicker and darker.
I've been shaving my legs since I was thirteen and I'm twenty one now, and I can assure you, my leg hair is no different from 2002 compared to today.
So to answer your question, YES it does appear darker but that's just the growing out stage. Once it grows back to whatever length it was before, it will look exactly the same.

Two years after I started shaving it grew darker.

No , I've never had that problem

@ Rachel The hair on our head is not the same as we were when we kids often times. I was a very light blonde. Now I'm dirty blonde to light brown. Your body hair has probably darkened as well, and you most likely noticed it when you began shaving.

Here is an article I found that talks about shaving. It mentions your questions (which is the answer that I gave) and also mentions other science bits that you might be interested in, and alternatives.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2007/12/13/does-shaving-make-hair-grow-back-thicker.html
One of the paragraphs mentions waxing. This is what it says: Some women may prefer waxing, which can decrease hair growth over time because the pulling traumatizes the roots so much, says Nigro. And some women use another pulling method, called threading, which is popular in Indian salons.
So even if this article is still making you worried your hair grow back darker and thicker (which is won't, it just looks like it) opt for waxing, because it will grow back finer after time. Hope this helps!

No I mean I don't think so, I've never had that problem.

Total myth. It's like an optical illusion, the hair is blunted from shaving, making it appear thicker and darker. If you shave regularly, though, it shouldn't be an issue.

@Mel W. I posted facts, lets see the articles explaining your post. It does not grow back more coarse or quicker.
