I use the Tarte brush slightly damp and buff. It works well for me.

I vary my application for the eyes, either using a concealer brush (Bobbi browns) or the beauty blender. however on my face its the RTs stippling brush. oh man its flawless makeup and everyone thinks its natural not that I share the secret to them :)

Real.techniques and urban make really good buffing brushes, if you prefer a sponge try a beauty blender or beauty blender knockoff.

If you continue to use the sponge make sure you dampen it before application for more coverage.

I second with Eileen, I use the real techniques expert face brush to blend out my foundation on my skin daily, and this brush is seriously amazing. for 8.99 (at ulta) it's a better quality brush than many other high end ones, it doesn' shed at all it's very dense and soft and makes application of foundaiton super quick under two minutes and completely flawless. I also use this brush for powder, bronzer, blush, etc- it's very versitile and I love real techniques brushes. I won't go back to a different brand again! Sponges (TO ME) waste the product, that's why the beauty blender is supposed to be wet so it doesn't absorb your foundation, I think the same thing applies to all sponges even the ones that come with foundaitons..and the finish can be streaky or maybe that's just me- I don't know..but hope this helps :)
