My beauty blender smells like blood?

So I've had this makeup sponge for maybe a month now and I recently cleaned it like I do every couple of weeks and I was doing my makeup the other day and I noticed that my beauty blender smells like blood?? Maybe not exactly blood but like a wet copper penny and it's extremely strong and the smell leaked to the rest of my sponges except one. I just don't know what's happening can anyone explain?

It's bacteria. that's the smell.
