I only use dicksons I absolutely love it, what a difference in my skin I've used it for about 3 years now, after I read an article somewhere about it. My skin is super oily and it just looks so clean and polished. I use it as a toner so the 2nd part of my skin care routine

Witch hazel is highly tannic, which is what gives it its astringent properties. Tannins are very powerful antioxidants, which is good for the skin, but they also constrict blood vessels, which stresses the skin. Recent innovations to distillation have resulted in products that lack the alcohol you used to find in WH products, but you're still going to need to find a balance between enough tannin to get the antioxidant benefit and the slow and steady stress you are applying to your skin by using it.
I personally think it's a mixed bag, too much so to be used as a primary ingredient in your products. I think it has some use towards the end where it's simply an additional antioxidant while lacking enough presence to stress your skin.
On its own, witch hazel doesn't actually have much benefit when it comes to fighting acne. It's not antibacterial; it doesn't exfoliate the skin or otherwise stimulate the desquamation process. I'm a firm believer that there's a lot of coincidence and confirmation bias when it comes to people and their perceived results when changing skincare.

Thayers is great! I personally prefer their aloe based witch hazel alcohol free toner - as I find it isn't as drying as the dickens toner - but basically it works well to absorb excess oils for me personally - but I find it to be too drying in winter so I usually only use it in summer - anyways that brand you have is nice but the rose petal one might have some unwanted and unnecessary fragrance in it if you are sensitive to that stuff just check the ingredients label to be sure but hope it works out for you!

I just mixed aloe vera juice with witch hazel as a toner for my granddaughter because she wanted something "fresh", I think she meant w/o chemicals. She loves it.
