I've been a blonde for about two years now. Starting to get bored of it, and I want to go darker. I'm aiming for an ash brown color. I heard that you can't dye your hair if there is already color on it. So that means bleaching? I was wondering how much it might cost. The color and bleach? (I have thick hair.)

It's not that dye can't go over dye but rather a lighter dye won't lighten over a darker dye, if that makes sense. Since you're already blonde you're probably not going to need any bleaching done (besides any roots). I would recommend getting consultations at local salons to get some estimates on how much it would cost.

You can't lift with color (that is, using blonde dye on brown hair won't achieve anything), but you can deposit over color. Depending on your current color, it shouldn't take too much to get to what you want. A protein filler might be needed to rebuild the bleached strands to allow color to hold, followed by dye, then toner to remove brass and get the ash tone you want. Any salon should be able to do it, or you can do it yourself if you have experience coloring your own hair.
