Dying my hair help!

Hello! So about a month ago I attempted to put highlights in my hair but I had them in for about an hour longer than maximum time suggested and there still was no dramatic difference whatsoever. So I am planning to highlight/balayage my hair again but do any of you know how I could do that and have it actually show up this time? Btw my hair is wavy curly and dark brown.
