If it happens during certain seasons I would think it's dry scalp. I think the difference is that dandruff is more yellow and oily in nature.

Since Dandruff is caused by a fungus, it would still be an issue for you in warmer months. It could, indeed, worsen like anything in winter, but you most likely have dry scalp.

Here's a great article on how to tell the difference and some tips.

If it is Dandruff, Sally has a "Generic" Tea Tree Scalp Treatment. Tea Tree oil is naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. I'd limit treatment to scalp only. The bonus is that this WILL relieve itchiness and inflammation from a dry scalp as well.

Selsun Blue works, but I'd keep it to just once a week and apply on only the scalp as it is rough on hair...especially color treated locks.

For either Dandruff OR Dry Scalp, making a Green Tea rinse kills bacteria, bit it also soothes, removes flakes, and reduces inflammation. I boil two tea bags in a cup of water and let cool. Then apply the rinse after shampooing..rubbing into my scalp and letting it sit about an hour, with a towel on my head. Then condition my hair and rinse out. A bonus, when you drink Green Tea, it is loaded with antioxidants and helps the liver as well as your complexion. The bags are fab on puffy or irritated eyes. You can also mix Tea Tree Oil with Olive oil and massage your scalp

Also for DRY scalp. You can also use Argan Oil on your scalp..massaging lightly.

Thanks Ana and Rozberry! I think it must be dandruff because it started last winter and lasted all year until this winter. it did get a bit better during the summertime but was still there. I did try head and shoulders last winter and my hair started falling out a lot. as soon as I stopped using head and shoulders the hair fall stopped too. so I e always been worried about trying another shampoo. I've heard good things about selsun blue though so I may give that a try!!

I will tell you one effective method.. Try using apple cider vinegar plus water in equal proportion and apply it into your scalp.. Let it sit for like 10 to 15 min.. Do massaging and wash it.. Repeat this step thrice in a week. You will see the results soon..
