Hey guys!
I have a standard £4 eyelash curler and I'm just wondering if the 20£ or more expensive ones are dramatically more effective? There is one like shu urma or something like that ( sorry I don't know the exact name ) and I wanna try but is it more in the technique or actual curler itself that gives results
Thanks!

I had been using a cheap elf eyelash curler for years and Alma always told me I should try BillyB's eyelash curler which is 15$ I believe. I was hesitant but about a month ago I bought the BillyB curler and it's so good! I'm never going back!
You should find a curler that matches you eyeshape!

" is it more in the technique or actual curler itself that gives results?"
It's a combination of both. You have to take your eye shape and the length of your lashes into consideration. There just is no one-size-fits-all eyelash curler. Eye, lid size, shape and curve differ from one person to the next. Eyelash curler 'jaw' shapes vary in the exact same way.
Lots of people have problems with curlers pinching. That doesn't mean you have a bad curler, you've just picked one that is a bad match for your eye shape and the shape of the curler. For example: if you’re trying to reach right to the root of your lashes at both corners of your round eyes with a flat curler, you're going to nip the middle of your eyelid, and that equals Ouch! A rounded curler can, and usually will cause major issues for individuals with flatter eyes. It's that curving at the edges of the cage that creates problems.
What also makes a more pricey lash curler better is simply the pad. You want a curler that has a more rounded silicone pad that has a bit of give to it. It's the roundness of the pad will keep the metal jaw of the curler from making too severe a clamp. You don't want a pad that is too smooth and slippery because you won't be able to get a reasonable grip on the lashes. The better the pad, the better the curl (IMO). Of course you'll need to replace the pad every 3 months or so, but that depends on how much you use the curler. The cost of the replacement pads is minimal. That being said, there are some brands that don't sell replacement pads, and you may end up having to replace the entire curler.
For the most part, a good lash curler will move easily, and won't have creaky joints or wobbly joints. The loops at the bottom of the arms should fit easily between your index and middle fingers easily, and the overall design of the curler should feel comfortable to use without feeling the need to use too much pressure on the lashes. I would also avoid getting a curler with black pads. I know this isn't altogether easy, but black curler with black pads can make it slightly more difficult to see if you have lined up your lashes correctly. It may take you a few tries to get the hang of using a curler with black pads. Not a huge deal, but I thought I'd mention it.
In my opinion there are 4 curlers worth looking at:
1. Shiseido's
2. Shu Uemura
3. Kevyn Aucoin's
4. Billy B.'s
Shiseido: In my opinion, this curler is probably the most universal in terms of being able to use with different eye shapes. What makes this one a bit more universal than others? Measurements...It has a shallow jaw and a minimal arc.
Shu Uemura: This is another well loved curler (Kevyn Aucoin actually designed this for Shu). Great for more flat eye shapes and shorter lashes. With this one, the angle is a bit thinne, so for individuals with a flatter eye shape, they will be able to get a great and even curl versus a more L shape kind of crimp.
Kevyn Aucoin: If you have a more rounded eye shape, this is an excellent lash curler. I love the red pads; makes it very easy to be able to see what you are doing. The cage on his curler is a bit wider which makes it very easy to get precise curl.
Billy B.'s: Love this one. Another almost universal curler. Love the pressure. This is one of those curlers that just feels right in my hands. You can get really precise and even curl with this one. The only slight downside... No replacement pads. The upside of that? I believe it's only $15, so when you have to replace it a few months down the line, the cost is negligible.
Now this is just me, but I have never understood 'why' some people will spend $65 on a foundation, but are reluctant to spend $20-$25 on a good lash curler. A good lash curler will last far longer than a $65 bottle foundation will. Again, that's just my opinion, but when it comes to your lashes, spend a tad more and get a curler that will give you the best curl, with the least amount of pressure and crimp. Hope this helped a bit. :)

Thank you for the information Jacqueline. I bought the Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler based on your recommendation and I haven't had any of the issues other girls report (pinching, not curling, not holding the curl, bad curl shape, pulling out lashes.) I use it everyday religiously! It doesn't feel flimsy or squeaky either like the cheaper options and it bought an extra pad!

You're welcome Kitty, and I'm glad you love Kevyn's curler. It's one of the best curlers on the market.
