So... I have normal to dry skin, and every time I put foundation on it looks super cakey. I make sure that my skin is moisturized for about 20 minutes before putting it on and prime it. I tried brushes, fingers and beauty blender. Is it because I'm not tapping it and instead I just brush it on my face? I don't think I quite get how to apply foundation with the beauty blender and everyone says is so amazing...

It could be that either the formula you are using isn't working with your skin needs or possible you are applying too much product in one go.. I find working in sections with a little amount a time to be best with my own skin.
As for the Beauty Blender, squeezed down to damp, it should be gently "pounced" upon the skin. With some products, it works better in my experience when the product is applied directly to the skin with fingers or a brush and the sponge is used to blend it out. For me, it depends on the product and each is obviously different. Some people love to use it to apply their foundation, but I use my fingertips and then pounce the foundation as I move blending it. It's only a very light touch that is needed.

I agree with roz you are probably applying too much and not spending enough time blending out the product - you only need a pea sized amount for your whole face (or less but never any more than that) and make sure you blend it really well too.

It could be different factors like perhaps your moisturizer and foundation don't have compatible bases,
For example if you're using a oil based moisturizer or silicone primer with a water based foundation it won't let the foundation dry down properly.

It could also be that you're using too much product overall or at one time.
You really want to work in thin layers letting each layer dry down as much as possible then if need be, add another light layer.

You're supposed to dab with the beauty blender instead of just rubbing it because it leaves the foundation unblended.

Try changing your foundation and mix a little bit of foundation into your primer and apply the mixed solution onto your face, it will go on a lot smoother.
