Depending on how dark your melasma is using just a full coverage foundation won't fully cover it. I suggest checking out EmilyNoel83 on YouTube, she had melasma on the tops of her cheekbones when she was pregnant and did a full video on how she covers it. I'll try and find the link for you (:

I have hyper pigmentation (different but as dark as melasma) and I've been on the hunt for something to cover it for a few YEARS now. NOTHING works, not even the strongest of concealers. And of course you can't color correct it because it's not a color.
BUT!! I found the answer in Marc Jacobs Remarcable foundation. I was shocked that this foundation actually covered my dark spots and my blotch of hyper pigmentation. With no extra concealer needed. I've tried all the other high coverage foundations, girl I've tried everything. This WORKS. If you can't find it in your shade, you can always lighten it. The first bottle I bought was a little too dark, so I added some white cream from an OCC palette to lighten it up. The OCC palette is small, it's a circle, one half is black one half is white. It's perfect. Hope this helps!!

These are my favorite full coverage foundations that were designed to cover up tattoos - KVD and dermablend and also the Estée Lauder maximum coverage foundation - there are videos of the KVD and dermablend foundations in YouTube of covering full body tattoos with their products - pretty crazy and great :)

So far, the Marc Jacobs Remarcable Foundation is the best I've found for covering my melasma, although it doesn't cover it it 100 %. Melasma is so hard to cover esp. while trying to maintain a natural look even with color correctors. I find its better to use a thin layer of a full coverage foundation than 2 layers of a medium coverage foundation. Less is better. I do use 2 different shades of foundations. 1 is my actual skin shade and the 2nd is a darker, peachier shade closer to the color of my melasma patches. I find using a foundation shade inbetween my actual skin color & my melasma patches covers the most effectively. But, because it doesn't cover it a 100%, I also use a contour & a bronzer in specific shades to warm up & visually blur out my melasma. My melasma is in the "blush" areas of my cheeks as well as in the cheekbone hollow areas. So I have natural shadows under my cheekbones although it's patchy, so I use products to even it out. And I also stick to peachy & coral blushes to further aid in the color correction & to liven up my cheeks. With thin layers of very specifically chosen shades, I am able to maintain a somewhat natural look. Even after all this, my skin is still not flawless. But that's ok, because if it looked flawless, it wouldn't look natural. I wouldn't mind just having a little uneven skin tone or darkness under my eyes, just don't like these stubborn melasma patches.

I just have to ask because I'm confused. How does (Hyper) pigmentation not have color? Kathryn (Hypo) pigmentation would be a loss of pigment color on the skin versus (hyper) which is a deepen of color on the skin.
What's everyone's skin type? This to can help get a very good view on product's to use on such skin and med grade and CC application usually does the trick.

I use Hydroquinone for my malasma. It's controversial and it takes a long time to work, but it helps. I've had IPLs and that helps too, but god forbid you let the sun touch your face again! Comes right back. My Hydroquinone is the strongest available, I believe. It's through my dermatologist and made in a compounding pharmacy. It's Retinol and Hydroquinone combined and must be refrigerated, which is a hassle, but I've found some tricks. Just another thing to think about...! ;)
