Hi all! I know I haven't been able to be very active on here lately (senior year of college is no joke!) but I'm free now, and not a moment too soon! I'm going to take this time to review the new Alice in Wonderland palette. As both a Tim Burton and Urban Decay junkie, I absolutely had to pick this up, and now I'm going to share my thoughts.

There are a lot of negative reviews on this palette, and a lot of people that I know won't be picking this up for various reasons. This is, of course, not the first Alice in Wonderland palette. The original was released in 2010 and included 16 shadows, 2 eyeliners and a mini Primer Potion. So, naturally, complaint number one is that this isn't a unique or interesting concept. I can see where this makes sense to some people, but when you're using something as absurd and bizarre as Tim Burton for inspiration, there are endless possibilities for interesting colors and combinations.

A second, followup complaint that many people have is that this isn't as wild a palette as they were expecting. This, I can understand. It's absolutely valid to say that as far as Tim Burton goes, this is a very understated palette. 11/20 shadows are technically considered to be very wearable neutrals, and I think that they could have probably pushed the envelope with the shade choices.

Additionally, and this complaint I halfway agree with, the packaging. I adore the outside packaging. It's over the top and a bit crazy, just like the old Book of Shadows palettes (of which I have three; this fits right in). HOWEVER, the checkerboard print around the shadow pans absolutely kills me. WHY. This stupid pattern makes it so impossible to clearly look at each of the shades. This irritates me to no end. The rest of the packaging, I utterly love. This little section? No. I do, however, really enjoy that the drawer pulls all the way out so I can easily hold it and move it and such.

Another common complaint I'm seeing is that people don't necessarily like the formula. For me, personally, I enjoy it, much as I like all Urban Decay shadows. I find the shades vibrant, easy to work with and blend, and smooth to apply. They work well together, and I think that they could blend to create myriad really interesting, beautiful looks. I actually made it my personal mission today to use as many shades as possible, and I ended up using eleven of them, but we'll get into that later.

I find that the formula on this palette is just as good as any other Urban Decay palette (and better than many, like the original Naked palette, for example).

I think, though, that overall the main problem with this palette in the eyes of the general public is that the pops of color are too out there for the neutral-lovers, and the neutral shades are too boring for the color lovers, so neither niche knows what to do with it. I'm not quite sure if this makes sense to anyone else or if I'm just creating ideas out of nothing.

Anyway, on to the shades that I used and the notes that I have on each of them. I'm going to do this in order of where they appear in the palette, going from left to right across each row, starting at the top left.

Hatter: this is a really bright, vibrant green. I ended up using this along my lower lashline to blend out the deeper colors. this applied really nicely, and didn't lose any of its vibrancy when I blended it downwards. I think it would be really easy to create an entire look based around this shade alone, and I do plan to do so.

Lily: this is just a really shiny, pinky toned white. I used this under my brows to help with blending. It worked, and it didn't take away from the overall look.

Heads Will Roll: this is such a gorgeous color in the pan! I don't find that it translates exactly, but it definitely is a nice teal on the eye. It's a matte base with silvery flecks of glitter, so its an interesting effect. I used this under my eye to blend into the deeper colors, and I think it accomplished that goal.

Time: holy bejeezus, this may be my favorite shade in the entire palette. This is such a gorgeous, shiny, smoky midnight blue with glitter, I don't even know what to do with myself. It blends out so incredibly beautifully, and it gives such an amazing sheen to the lids. I only used this on the very outer corners of my eyes, but I really can't wait to use it in a more prominent part of a look.

Gone Mad: this is a beautiful, warm toned purple. I love this! Shades like this tend to make my eyes personally look incredibly green, and I enjoy that look on myself. I used this all over the crease and then built over/around it when I decided that I wanted a more dramatic, less wearable look.

Bandersnatch: this is a really pretty blue! I find that it comes across more navy blue than a bright blue, but it's really pretty, regardless. I stuck this under my lashline, in between "Time" and "Heads Will Roll." I think it actually made a great transition shade between the two.

Paradox: this is a really pretty duochrome kind of orange/gold color. it looks a little bit like "Flame" from the Vice 4 palette, but not quite. That one isn't a duochrome, however, it's more just an orange with a metric ton of glitter to it. This is a far more interesting color, and it was gorgeous on the center of the lids.

Salazen Grum: This might actually be an exact dupe of "Sonic" from the Vice 3 palette, though I don't have that one on hand at the moment to compare the two. It's a really beautiful, shiny red color. I adore this and will use the heck out of it. I ended up using this to blend out "Paradox" on the lid, since they both have the same finish. It worked nicely; the two together would probably make a really great sunset colored shadow look.

Metamorphosis: this is a gorgeous, satiny periwinkle blue that blended really nicely with "Gone Mad." I placed this in the inner section of my crease, up against my nose. I think it blended out really well, actually. Unexpectedly beautiful, I think.

Cake: this is a really pretty matte-ish pink with glitter, I used this in the inner and outer corners of my eye, blending it around in kind of a halo effect with "Salazen Grum" and "Paradox" in the middle. It applied really well, and blended nicely too. I was impressed with this shade overall.

Royal Flush: I used this in my very inner corner, between "Metamorphosis" and "Heads Will Roll." This works well on its own (I had no time a few days ago, and ended up using this all over the lid), but with the rest of this look being so bold, this really didn't give the desired effect of intense shine on the inner corners.

I think that's everything I have to say about this palette. It's $60 for 20 shades, which totals less than $3 per shadow, so if you have $60 and you really want this palette, I'd argue its worth it.

A few notes on the pictures...I know they're awful, I'm working on getting daylight bulbs for my vanity mirror, but until then this lighting is very yellowy, especially because it was pouring rain outside so this was the only light I had. I'd also like to point out that I got a bit of a sunburn last week so my forehead is peeling a little, so don't mind that =)

Please feel free to share questions, comments, suggestions or opinions! Have a good night, ladies!

I just put this pallete in my cart for Friday... was on the fence but now I'm sold!!

I definitely understand the wavering, but I hope you like it! I think it's worth it =) I plan to do an actual, "wearable" look tomorrow, but honestly I think this is a pretty versatile palette and you could get a lot of interesting looks from it!

I got it Hannah. :) Great review. Packaging wise, I LOVE IT!! It's one of the reasons that I purchased it, and it truly did not disappoint. I'm so glad I have it. :) I really like the shade selection and the pops of color offered up in this palette. Color wise, this palette is 'wild' enough for me, and I like the fact that this palette does not take itself too seriously. It's a fun palette that is great for spring and summer ( IMO).

I'm not too fond of the matte shades, but to be totally honest, Viseart has ruined me for any other matte shadows. I haven't had a chance to really play with it, but overall, I think Urban Decay did a good job on this palette. You just have to let your imagination run wild with this palette and see where it takes you.  :)

I'm so excited to do so, Jackie! I think it would have been nice if there was something a bit weirder like a bright yellow or a really obnoxious orange or purple, but that's just me; I don't know what I'll do with all of those neutral browns! Lol. I think tomorrow I'm going to do green and blue =)

I hear you on the bright yellow/ obnoxious orange... I agree, that would have been really nice in this palette. My favorite shades in this palette are Cake, Paradox and Salazan Grum. I do wish Dream On had a bit more punch, but overall there are some fun shades in here. :) I missed out on the first Alice palette, and there was no way I was going to miss this one.  :)

Fortunately, with the first Alice palette it's just permanent shades in cool packaging so you're not missing too much! =) Paradox is probably my second favorite because I just cannot get over Time. It's way too pretty to ignore!

I'm frankly surprised that this palette hasn't sold out yet.

Everywhere that I read about it, everyone is unimpressed with the formula (though I don't find it different from their regular formula...?) and thinks the packaging is too bulky, which just goes to show that they have no appreciation for some old school Urban Decay ;)

Call me old school then, because I like it. It reminds me of their various Books of Shadows.

Oo love your look! I haven't gotten to play with mine yet because also senior lol.
To be honest I bought it for the packaging because God knows I didn't need it, but it's just too cool to resist. Some of the shades when I just rubbed my fingers on them seemed a little 'mehh' but maybe when I actually start playing around with it they'll be good.
Overall I'm happy I got it and I'm definitely ready to work with it!

I love that look! The green is amazing. I think I'm most excited about heads will roll, dream on, and metamorphosis.

Good review, I skipped on this palette the reason why I would buy it is cuz of the butterfly and the quote it says before you open it to see the butterflys I just couldn't bring my self to buy it though lol.

You do love cute packaging, Lili! Yeah this isn't necessarily worth it if you're just interested in the packaging, not the shades. I'm sure you can find some pretty, Tim Burton-esque artwork though! haha.

Beautiful! I especially like the green in the second look you posted, but both look lovely!

I agree the packaging is adorable, but I guess in terms of functionality (also in terms of storage!!) it just makes me want to reach for it less. I'm very much a grab and go girl; I rarely sit down and spend a while on my makeup. This feels very much so like a "take your time and appreciate the whimsy" palette, which is undoubtedly stunning, but I guess not very practical for the likes of myself. And the bulkiness makes it harder to store for those of us who are limited to just one shelf! Believe me, if I could spread out more I would, and I'd be all over something like this. Oh the woes of sharing a bathroom.

I am glad to hear the quality is up to par though. Even though I'll probably pass, this definitely makes me want to pull out my Vice 3 a bit more! :) thanks for the review! And also, what lippie are you wearing in the first pic? It's gorgeous!

May 19, 2016

Hannah K.

The quality is definitely great, Jamie, and I get that this probably wouldn't be a great palette for someone interested in a simpler routine, that makes a lot of sense. I tend to take a while on my makeup (I'll even wake up hours earlier than necessary in order to spend time on it!) so this is fun for me because I can just stare at it and pick whatever colors I feel like.

Oh, I totally forgot! The lipstick in the first picture is Mirana and Mad Hatter mixed together =) I actually don't like the formula of these =( It's really slippery, and both lipsticks have a ton of glitter in them. However, they're great colors; Mad Hatter is like an iridescent blue/purple, so it makes the Mirana shade almost duochrome-esque! It was a cool effect, and the colors are really pretty, but they're definitely not my favorite formula. If they're the same formula as the new Vice Lipstick range, that would suck because it'll be just another reason not to grab those =( Sorry to disappoint!

May 19, 2016

Jamie D.

Bummer! It's ok, I'm sure there's just a beautiful shades in better formulas. Hopefully the Vice lipsticks aren't a disappointment too, that would be awful! :(

And I understand, it's always a luxury to be able to play around with a palette! There's very few things that are more important to me than makeup, but sleep does happen to be one of them lol, I am not an early riser - couldn't be even if I tried ;)

May 19, 2016

Hannah K.

I hope the Vice lipsticks are better, because they already have one strike against them for the packaging =(

I've always been an early riser, so it's fine for me but yeah, I understand that it's not always practical for a lot of people haha

ThatGirlShaeXO did swatches of the Vice lip collection. Some of them are definitely from the UD Gwen line  :/
