A while back, probably about a year or two ago, I dyed my hair black using black box dye (yikes, I know, I'd never do it again, lol) and it WONT BUDGE. BLEACHING over the top of it didn't even begin to touch the color! (Will not use bleach over it again either, I don't like the idea, trying to keep my hair healthy).. I don't know what to do. It looks so silly because my natural hair is growing out and it's like a mousy, ashy brown color.. And then it turns into black! I hate it. I don't know what to do.. Any suggestions?

It's not as noticeable in the picture, but in person, especially in natural light, there's a NOTICEABLE difference!

I'm confused what do you mean it won't budge?

I cannot remove the color. It doesn't lighten at all or anything.

You can't remove the black or brown? Ifs it the black you can take out the color by using those things to take the color out( can't remember what they are called) or you can just let the color fade

Have you tried a colour stripper?

I can't remove the black. I haven't used a color stripper, I'm afraid that it will severely damage my hair- will it? Have you had experience with it??

My sister has used it I think. The one she used made her hair smell bad for about 3-5 days but other than that it was okay for her hair

I've never used it but if it gets rid of the black, it's nothing a couple of hair masks or deep conditions can't fix

Honestly I would talk to a stylist about it at a salon. I definitely wouldn't attempt anything myself, but done correctly color stripping/bleach shouldn't be too damaging as long as you take care of your hair and go slow. You may have to get it bleached more than once, depending upon how light your natural hair is (hard to tell in the pic) which is why you should definitely go see a professional! I would start reading some reviews of stylists/salons in your area. I'm by no means a hair expert (at all) which is why it's definitely a good idea to consult with one in real life who can see the color and asses the health of your hair :)

One bleach wash by a professional should do the trick, I've seen it happen plenty of times. And it also took this awful dark brown (almost black) out of my hair in one try. Now I have my lovely natural shade back

Use anti dandruff shampoo once a week, follow with a hair mask. The chemical in the shampoo will gradually remove the hair color. Also you could smash vitamin c pills (about 10), clear shampoo, and coconut oil. Apply this mixture to your hair as if you were dying your hair, put a hair cap and leave it for 30 mins, rinse and condition.

Or you could just cut it all off... That will get rid of it and be a healthy alternative to re-dying it

I don't think I have the will power to cut it all off lol!!

I agree about seeing a professional. I'm actually surprised that the black has stayed in your hair for as long as it has, I used to use black box dye for years and it always faded over time for me.

I agree with seeing a professional but alternatively if you're still big about doing it by yourself use a color stripper. I have prior experience with a color stripper , it was called Color Fix. I worked really really well because I had black dye in my hair for about a few months so needless to say there was significant build up. I used it I think like twice over the course of a week and it lifted all the black out of my hair. When I bleached it after, I didn't have any problems with it lifting. Granted, it's really important that you keep your hair conditioned and moisturized because it's a little drying at least for me it was. The only other con was that the smell was absolutely ABSOLUTELY awful. It smelled like rotting boiled eggs or fish or something.

I think it stayed so long because your hair is either dry or not porous.

Use a color stripper, I believe the kits come with a 20 developer which isn't very harsh just do a good deep conditioning treatment a day or two before and after the treatment

Bleach is a bit stronger even with a 20 developer (which is why a short bleach bath could work too). I actually use a 20 developer to bleach my roots and they're naturally like black.

I've used a color-stripper on a few people and it'll take out the hair dye.
Your hair may seem lighter/orangey but that's cause you dyed it.

Permanent hair dye works by taking out a little bit of your natural pigment and replacing it with the synthetic/artificial color which is why people are able to go a shade or two lighter with permanent hair dye compared to using a semi or Demi permanent which only works by staining the hair.

I do agree that color-strippers tend to smell horrible but they are effective and shouldn't really cause damage. Maybe just a tiny bit of dryness but nothing too drastic.

I'd go to a professional and get color balance. They put lightener, developer and a clarifying shampoo and mix it together..then applying to the box colored areas of What's left, they will rub it together and lift the color out. I do it so many times because black box color is the toughest to get out!

I bleached mine once and got black out and wasn't to damaged.
