When I've been getting in the shower & washing my hair lately, its been getting really matted. I literally have to separate my hair as it just chuncks up when I was the suds out. I also have to use conditioner, otherwise I wouldn't be able to brush my hair to dry it.
I've been using the same shampoo for about 6 months, but its only the past month it has started to happen

can anyone give me any advice, or why it might be happening please?

What is your hair type? Have you been color treating it? Bleaching it? Using heat? And what shampoo and conditioner are you using?

I'm asking because it can help to figure out if it's damaged or maybe it's the shampoo... Sometimes you will notice what a shampoo can do only after a long time, perhaps it's too harsh.

I've been colouring my hair for about 6 months, & I've never noticed a problem before, only recently. usually its been a brown hair dye, but this time I used a brown red. I don't know if that makes a difference.
its always been very oily, so bad that I have to wash it every day. if I'm not going out or in college then I don't wash it that day. lately it's been snapping quite easily, & I have loads of baby hairs all over my head
I usually just use a hair dryer too

the shampoo and conditioner I use are the garnier ultimate blends ones

Change your shampoo, switch up to Tresemme, and stop using conditioner. I read an article shere it said that the reason for oily hair, split ends and dry/ ough hair is the conditioner. Believe it or not, but whenever I used conditioner the next day I would have a sever case of split ends and dandruff. So bad that it would show on my shoulders. So I stopped my conditioner and it stopped. And my hair texture definetly showed improvement. Ohh and use the moisture something shampoo from tresemme.

Do you brush your hair before you hop in the shower? My hair is pretty long and it gets knotty pretty much all the time - so I have to brush it often - usually before I get it wet and after I add my styling products too.

You can try switching to a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo. You can definitely keep using a conditioner... as long as it's silicone-free. Check the ingredients. If it contains Dimethicone or other ingredients that end in -one it's probably going to only give you a false sense of softness without locking in moisture.

Moreover, box hair dye is not the best thing for your hair and it can be more damaging than getting it done professionally.

Also, I wouldn't wash it every day, especially since it's starting to overproduce oil...

What can you do now?
I'd suggest a deep conditioning treatment that is silicone free, something with few ingredients... watch out for the label "NATURAL" because it can be deceiving. You are from the UK but in the US, the FDA does not regulate that term. I live in Italy and I've seen it in a few places where it shouldn't.

Anyway, this is what I'd personally do, I'm no expert but I would say take it step by step and try a nice mask and change shampoo, if it fails, move on to another solution: reduce heat usage and wash less, or it could be just as simple as getting a haircut!

A lot of the time a haircut will help so much!

Thank you! will using dry shampoo be OK on days that I don't wash my hair, or is that just as damaging/ not good in general?

I would try dry shampoo in between washes :)
My hair is dry so I don't use dry shampoo but I hope someone can help you out!
Sometimes it's just trial and error that will show you the "light"

I have an oily scalp so dry shampoo is my savior on days that I don't wash - my hair only really gets oily on days I usually wash it but since I wash at night to cut down time to get ready in the morning I use the tressemme dry shampoo on days my hair is really oily and it works well for me - it's never damaged my hair that I have seen but I rarely get split ends anyways
