I think any dark coloured gown would look beautiful on you! And it doesn't have to be black or navy or anything like that. It can also be the dark shades of certain colours like a dark red or dark purple.

It would be hard to find one $40 or under because usually they're around the $300 range but I'd check out Urban Outfitters which has dresses in the $60 range (floor length and short) plus you could wear it out again unlike the typical prom dress. They have more flowy styles and can be easily dressed up with some jewelry, good luck (:

JcPenny has great prom dresses for everyone including plus size (I'm not saying you're plus sized I'm just saying in case someone who is is reading this as well)

Go to the mall! A lot of stores like Macy's and JcPenny's bring prom dresses in, and some in your price range. Prom dresses aren't all in the $300 range. I got mine for under $200, and that was expensive. I've gotten floor length dresses for around $50.
