I can't braid my hair for the life of me.

Recently I cut my hair shorter due to dead ends and I've always liked dutch braid pigtails but I can't braid what so ever and I would really love to start wearing this hair style but when I do it I always lose the pieces of my hair and when I start of I don't get the right amount of hair so please help me with tips and tricks thanks so
