Anyone know a REALLY good eyeshadow primer? I have normal skin so my lids aren't super oily or dry or anything. I just want to know what's a really good eyeshadow primer that will really make my shadow pop! I've been using Makeup Geek and Anastasia shadows a lot lately and everything I have is super great, but certain colors I just need a little more oomph! if you know what I mean.

I honestly still haven't found a eyeshadow primer I like - I get the best results when I just use I tiny bit of concealer on my lids and set it with either my powder or a shadow the same color as my skin.
If you use super colorful shadows and what to make them pop even more you can try using a white cream eyeshadow as a base :)

I've tried so many eyeshadow primers and tbh I've found that using Mac Pro Longwear on my lids then lightly setting it with a powder works the best for me. My eyeshadow blends so much smoother. If I want eyeshadow to look super pigmented I use NYX jumbo eye pencil in Milk then set it with a white or translucent powder.

Mac paints (not to be confused with paint pots) but paints are awesome. Too faced shadow insurance and candlelight are great.Benefit stay don't stray is another great one. But if your only wanting a more color pay off just use mixing medium. :)

Personally I find that it depends what I want. If I want the colors more vibrant, I do what Alma said and mix them with something (I'm lazy, so my something is usually water) and that makes them a little more bright and pigmented. I really only use primer for longevity, and my favorite for that is the Urban Decay Primer Potion, I just find that it works really well for me, personally.
You could also try a color base. When I'm working with bright colors I tend to use a black creme base (mine is from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics), and if I'm using neutral colors that I find to be less than pigmented, I tend to gravitate towards a neutral base like the Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden.

Hannah which of the primer potions do you use - I got a sample of some of them and they made my lids look so crusty and I don't have dry lids at all haha, so now I'm wondering if I had some bad ones.

I have the original at the moment, and it works great for me! I think it's one of those products that really varies from person to person, you know?

I swear by Shadow Insurance by Too Faced. I have hella oily eyelids and hooded eyes on top of it, and my shadow stays in place all. damn. day. I usually set it with a powder or a neutral shadow before I start with any color to make the shadow blend easier ☺️ I've never had any luck with anything from the drugstore.

OMG! Thanks so much everyone! all of this was helpful! THANKS for those swatches too Kitty! For those saying they use a mixing medium when they want color payoff, what do you mean exactly? Can that be like MAC Fix+ or is it something else?
Apr 16, 2016
Aleena P.
Yes you can use Mac fix+ or any setting spray for a mixing medium. it does better than water and some of the sprays work with shadows almost as well as duraline.

Perfect! Fix+ is something I already have. Thanks Aleena!

You can use fix but it's not fully a mixing medium. Mac has a few mixing medium's you should check out and you can also make your own. :)
Fix just damps the brush to pick up product and help set, it doesn't help with color enhancement and I wouldn't use a setting spray. Mixing mediums is different it is a multi product. :)

ohh gotcha! Thanks Alma! I will check out what MAC has for mixing mediums. Or even my own! Is it basically just water and glycerin or is there more involved with making your own?
