I've been wearing fake nails for months. I really want to get back to my natural nails but right now they're so brittle, weak, and soft. I can't stand going without my fake nails because without them my nails hurt so bad. Any suggestions on how to treat this problem?

You can try soaking your nails in olive, argan, coconut, or castor oil to help strengthen them. Also, cuticle oil and hand creme should keep the nails moisturized. Try not to expose your nails to water as much, but make sure to drink plenty of water as well. I hope this helps. :)

Also, keep them short and trimmed as well.

Whenever I wear nail polish, I use the Sally hansen hard as nails strengthener as a base. when my nails are bare, I use the burts bees lemon cuticle cream all over the nails. With that combination I've managed to keep my nails strong and without much discolouration despite wearing nail polish regularly.

Apply cuticle oil. I like sally hansen vitamin e. This will help to get healthy cuticle which will allow your nails to grow. Also apply a nail strenghthener. I also like the sally hansen hard as nails (:

I disagree with Olivia, acrylics do damage your nails even when done correctly. Some may be worse than others depending on the natural state of your nails but acrylics done correctly can still be very damaging. I agree with keeping them short so they don't break, religiously apply some cuticle oil & hand and nail cream and free of polish for a little bit so they can breathe. Keeping them trimmed short is so important so they don't tear or break causing more damage. They will be fine soon don't worry about it I get liquid gels or gel polish all the time I just take breaks to get my natural nails to a healthy state.

I've been using the glue on nails. When I take them off I soak them in acetone. I took them off for good today, my nails are so terrible! Thank you for all the good advice! I'll definitely be using some type of cuticle oil and hand cream.

Sarah, have you tried the SNS Powder? I have them remove polish with the buffer verses soaking. Do you think that's a better option?

Olivia, Sarah is a licensed Estie with a lot of experience in skin and nail care. I think she's referring to cumulative use of gel nails in this instance..and of a particular type of gel nail. There are a few options so it can get tricky. :)
