It would be very helpful if you shared your own unique techniques/tricks for a non-cakey, smooth base. I have normal/oily skin but right now it is soo dry! I'm struggling with my foundation everyday :( It is always looking cakey and I get a lot of dry patches over my face when I apply my foundation (I'm using revlon colorstay with the real techniques miracle complexion sponge- damp) please help!

Try using your fingers to apply and then go over with a sponge to take off any excess product!! xx

I know the feeling! I have combo skin with very dry areas from psoriasis and its really flaring up lately. I have been using dior star foundation (its quite glowy but not dewy more of a satin finish) applied with a damp sponge but I will spray my face first with either mac fix plus or smashbox primer water and ill apply it again generously after I've lightly powdered and done my blush, bronzer etc. If your going to be using a matte foundation such as revlon colourstay you need to exfoliate your skin well, moisturise well and use an oil if you have one at night time! This is what I've been doing lately and it's working combined with my treatment creams. Today I could wear my estee Lauder double wear foundation since my skin was in a better position :-)

I have the day/night cream from Vichy, called dry skin, I apply this before I'm going to sleep. In the morning I use Nivea men aftershave sensitive (got this from Nikkietutorials), if you don't want your face look cakey anymore, I think the most important step is; Use a setting spray at the end, it makes all the makeup looks like skin and not like thick layers of foundation and powers, a nice photo finish + your makeup last longer,

Beautisteel- I'll try that way too.

Thanks for your trick Rebecca...I'm definitely going to try the oil but could you say which oil is best or does it really not matter? Because I have a massive bottle of pure coconut oil at home lol Also I used almond oil on my face a few years back but sadly it gave me facial hair...

Merel- Could just 'blow drying' the face help as an alternative to a setting spray?? Sorry but I'm on a budget :(

I use clarins blue orchid oil which I love I usually mix a few drops into my moisturiser to give it a little extra kick :-) I've no experience with any other oils but you could try the one you have and see if that helps.

I used that exact combo as you today but I just recently bought the colorstay for dry skin formula and have less problems with that one vs the original one:)

Oooh then I must try the dry skin formula huh because I'm using the oily skin formula...

@beautisteel, wouldn't using your fingers make foundation look streaky?

:) It doesn't feel like it moisturizes or anything but it doesn't cling to dry patches like crazy. It's pretty great!

After double cleansing I use aloe vera gel and Mario Badescu AHA and Ceramide lotion to moisturize. Then I use 2 primers. First I use Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser (isnt rlly considered a primer) and then I use the Elf Hydrating Primer. Then I use Elf BB Cream and apply that super roughly with my fingers, and then I go over it with a damp Real Technique sponge to blend it out and give it a flawless look. Then I'll put on my concealer around my eye area and I only powder where I put my concealer, I don't powder anywhere else at all. This gives me a dewey, healthy look and this is perfect for my dry skin days, although I have normal skin. Then I will spray my face with some green tea I cooled down in the fridge, because it rlly gives me a fresh look.

Hey, I don't know what your budget is but maybe ; Urban decay setting spray all nighter in travel size is one of the cheapest ones tried.

Patch test first with the coconut oil, it is comedogenic and known to clog pores/cause breakouts. My fave affordable facial oil is jojoba.

Regarding the setting spray. Do you mean "blow drying" with your hands? That's completely different from what a setting spray does! There's even cheaper ones than that $14 UD one. There's like $4 setting sprays at the drugstore! I have one and it helps with making my skin look like skin "again" and prolonging my makeup wear. I think it's worth investing in 😊

Kassandra, basically I meant ACTUALLY blow drying my face- yes really! I know your all going to think I'm strange but I guess everyone has their own unique and sometimes weird ways for doing things
I've learnt that this little stupid method helps to kind of set my make up by heating my skin up and then I tap my face lightly...this really does help- believe it or not... :)
And thank you, because to be honest $14 is a little too much for me to pay for a spray lol soo thanks for helping me save $10 :D LOL

Traci, I'll also try the jojoba oil as well :)
does anyone know if I could get a spray bottle on ebay? because I also wanted to try Ariana's 'cooled green tea' method...please do tell me if you know

I don't have any clean spray bottles at home :(
I don't want to use my body oil bottles (too oily) or other used ones...
