how can I choose the appropriate foundation to match my skin tone where it looks natural?
Jan 20, 2013

Determine your undertone, and then try to go to a store that has windows so you can test out whichever foundation you are interested in, in natural lighting. I always get mine swatched on my jawline and my forehead so I can be sure it matches me 100%. If I can't get to a place that has access to natural lighting, I make sure the undertones are correct and then go a shade lighter than what looks okay in the store lighting.

So true!! I am olive but most foundations dont come in true neutral tones. So, sometimes I have no choice but to get yellow undertoned foundations and blend down to my neck/neutralize them with tinted loose powders.

this is a great help I've never really put makeup on but occasionally I would like to get dolled up but could never seem to get the proper foundation because it's either to light or to dark. what brand would any of you recommend would be a good match for olive tone combination skin and is easy maintenance

Easy maintenance? Hmm... I personally like Make Up For Ever, and only am willing to pay the prices because they do exactly what they promise to do, and they cater to all skin tones. Plus, their foundations are sweat and water resistant. For something less expensive, L'Oreal's True Match line offers a huge variety of shades and they are based on undertones. MAC is okay also, as long as you dont have very sensitive skin.

for ever products are sold in sephora right?

Yea they are! Um, I have a set by BM, but I feel like it makes me look aged....and I'm only 21! Hahaha. I am even oily skinned, and the only mineral foundation I like is by Neutrogena because its not so mattifying. Mica Cosmetics makes a nice mineral foundation also, but it has small shimmer particles that I look crazy wearing hahaha

Yea, maybe you should check out their their Duo-Mat powder! It blends really nicely and stays put all day! I've had mine for about a year now and I am just barely finishing it.

I will definitely check out the duo-mat powder. If bm makes you look aged at 21 I'll look ancient cause I'm 38 Hahaha.

Haha! My Mother is 46 and she liked it for awhile but said she used her liquid foundation one day, and she said she realized how much younger she looked. The Sephora SA's are really nice & always go out of their way to make sure we are by a window to help me determine coloring. They also usually do a full layer of foundation on me, so I know how exactly how it looks before I buy it.

I was actually looking to see where the nearest sephora store is so I can go in and have them assist me in choosing the proper make-up and showing me how to properly apply it.

how do you determine your undertone? :)
Jan 20, 2013
Cameron R.
There are tons of tests you can do. Like do you look better in gold or silver jewelry? Do your veins appear blue, or green? If you look better in gold you would warm toned, if you look better in silver, you would be cool toned, if you can wear both without looking washed out, you would be neutral undertoned or olive.
