Actually, if you very closely examine the catalog, the makeup looks aren't super dramatic. A lot of the appeal from VS is that it looks EFFORTLESS, not that it's gooped on, and the same goes with hair. Those tousled waves look effortless, like you just rolled out of bed that way.
You also have to keep in mind that photoshop and good lighting will go a long way. Adjusting the tone curve, contrast/brightness, white balance and exposure alone can blot out a lot of imperfections.
That being said, every VS model that has ever been interviewed is OCD about skin care. Can't do anything if you don't start with a good base.
Here's what they have in common (I have a catalog here).
1. Blush
2. Contour
3. Shimmer in the inner corner...it's always very light so that you have to really look to notice it
4. A lot of them are wearing a nude liner on the lower inner rim
5. Full brows. Not super dark, but full and not overplucked.
6. The dramatic, smokey eyes are reserved for hot-lingerie shots, not for everyday undies/pjs/clothes.
7. Pink or nude-y pink gloss/balm/lipstick. Not shiny, not glittery/shimmery. Mostly to enhance the natural lip color.

As an aside, I know the photos you're talking about. Those pictures are taken as full front facials in flat lighting. That kind of photographic situation would make anyone look less than ideal. They still have perfect skin, and their facial features are still gorgeous.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I don't mean that they literally have a mental problem. I just meant that they're very careful about taking very good care of their skin.

Just to throw it out there, Since someone asked what OCD is... OCD is not the "clean freak disease." While that is a commonly KNOWN affliction of OCD, OCD afflictions can have an almost endless amount of possibilities from knocking on door knobs compulsively, to pulling hair, to masturbating, and on and on and on... literally. :D Its also not OCD if someone is just really really tidy, OCD is part compulsion, like you have absolutely no power whatsoever to stop yourself from doing thing X, but also an underlying and rarely mentioned part is that many who suffer from OCD actually feel like they (or someone else) may come to greater harm if they don't habitually continue with their compulsion. It's a fascinating but very sad and powerful behavioral disorder.

to say someone has OCD just cause they are anal about certain things is ignorant. I personally have OCD and I take prescribed medication daily so I can function properly.

Don't get your knickers all in a twist. It's a colloquial expression and lord knows I'm not the first person to use the term in that way. OCD can and does manifest in the form of ritual behavior, so to say that a model might be OCD in regard to taking care of her skin (as ritual behavior that is never skipped) is an apt description, not a put-down to anyone.
