I'm wondering why women in 1950 were much classier than now? What has changed in our American culture that today's women are not as polished as they were back in 1950s?

This isn't a beauty question.

Styles and trends just change over time, and what someone might say is classy someone else might not. Just people's opinions. What about today's women makes you say they're not as polished?

Not in the correct category and it is just an opinion.

I agree with Emily. It is completely possible for today's women to be polished looking. Its just different as styles and trends change. Although, I love vintage fashions I'm glad to not live in the 50's. Racism and misogyny were way worse and not to mention cone bra's just looked ridiculous haha.

There's still some classy women out there. but then again every women will have there own definition of classy. styles do change with time I do notice everything is about revealing your body now but when can you do these are the times we live in. some women think showing more it's sexy others may think completely opposite. but these us out era now women want to be powerful and noticed. Idk if you have came across an article of all these famous wanting to go topless, saying "if men do it why can we" I disagree but others may not. at the end there's absolutely nothing that can be done its just the time we live in.

Haha. The truth if the matter is, men were superior. Point blank. Women were to be seen and not heard, and expected to follow the rules of their spouse. Literally. I've asked my grandparents and great grandparents about this, and some of the stuff they said was pretty heartbreaking in my opinion. Thank heavens times have changed, in my opinion. These ladies are right, this thread belongs in the Style section. I'll move it for you,
"classy" has everything to do with style :)

Technology, opinions, style have evolved since the 1950's. There was class to be had in every decade but there was also those that did not maintain "classy demeanor". Just the term alone is subjective at best because what one deems classy may be viewed as trashy/unstylish. I'm glad I didn't grow up during that period. My grandparents marriage was deemed illegal because they were an interracial couple...I myself is part of a interracial marriage today. And as far as style...the under garments back then was straight up uncomfortable and don't get me started on the pantyhose/garter nonsense.LOL.

Well, women wore bullet bras because the dresses were cut differently and the underwear they wore would affect how the dress hung on the body. It's strange how much sizing has changed, I have a vintage dress that is my exact measurements from the 1940s, which is 40-30-40 and it's labelled as a uk size 16! I am a uk size 8! Strange!!

Thank you ladies for your opinions! My grandparents were from Soviet Union, however, women back there did work and could divorce and support themselves. My grandmother was a Computer Programmer. The reason I asked because after watching movies with Marilyn Monroe, I paid attention how differently women carried themselves, and dressed classier, not the hipsterish / boyfriend jeans / boyfriend everything look. I just took a note of it and wondered what has changed. Thank you! 😚

It was definitely a different culture back then - when curves and an hourglass figure were ideal compared to the rail thin (almost anorexic looking) models that we see today - but not all women embrace the current culture - some women and men are still conservative like more people used to be - but with the Internet and the additional freedom that women have nowadays - whereas back then wearing pants or being anything but a housewife was frowned upon - and there are things from that time I don't agree with - but in terms of style - I still find myself gravitating to Marilyn Monroe and vintage styles since modern styles are not as flattering on a curvy figure like mine - so not everyone is the same and we all have our own style and ideas of "classy"

Also I think your definition of "women" is too general and not including the working and/or educated woman who wears heels and a suit or dresses every day - it sounds like you are referring to more teenagers than women... Which in the case of teenagers they seem to dress more for comfort than style - and why not? They are just kids and nobody really cares what they wear other than their own peers - but it's still not really our place to judge each other like that.
