When they do it for pageants they usually focus on what the mood is, if it is for a model do something natural and not to dramatic so it really shows their face as it is:-)

For a models portfolio...natural and simple is the only way to go. Especially if they are just starting out with a composite card. If this model you are working is seeking to be repped by an agency natural beauty is a must so this is definitely not the moment to explore uncharted territory. A great reference guide for ideas...any of the Bobbi Brown books and Lisa Etheridge (a pro MUA).

Yes you need to keep it natural any time that I've had to do headshot makeup on a client or even when I've got my headshots renewed it usually is just light foundation mascara eyebrows filled in light blush and that's it you want her to look as natural as possible. When I do my headshots I usually just ask for powder foundation mascara and lightly fill in my brows with a really light pinkish tone lip.
