I've been using powder for a while, but I don't really understand it's purpose. I heard that it keeps foundation on, and that it keeps you from becoming "cakey." I've also heard it makes you look "cakey." So are any of those true? Could any of you girls explain powder's purpose?

Powder just kind of sets your foundation in place and can also be used for the purpose of a matte finish. I'm not too sure about the whole cakey thing but I know that over applying powder will make you look cakey and very powdery.

You can use powder for a number of things!
You can use a powder to set your foundation - When doing this you just use a little bit in a brush and dust it over your face so that the foundations don't "slip of you face". This is especially good if you have oily skin.
When using powder you can use a mattifing powder that will keep you looking matte - again good if you have oliy skin.
I also sometimes use a powder the same color sa my skin just to apply after my moisturizer - this just slightly evens out my skin tone, keeps me somewhat matte and gives me a fresher look on days where I don't want to wear makeup.
Using powder can cause you to look cakey, as can foundation or any other thing you put on your face, its all about how and how much you apply :)

To avoid cakey makeup, make sure you wait to put on foundation after your moisturizer. also, only apply it in your t-zone.
