What for, exactly? Just in general, or for anything specific?

Petroleum jelly is bad for your skin as it clogs your pores and attracts bacteria. Also there's is no benefits from putting it on skin as it is not a moisturizer and will not enter your skin to hydrate it.

I've always wanted to understand this too. My Mom has been putting vasseline on her face (and only that) for 40 years, and has never had a break out, you can't see her pores and she doesn't look over 40. (she is 63)...anyway guess I'm just sharing that :)

One of my friend use vaseline under eye arrea to prevent wrinkles... is it a good practice? how vaseline heal crak heals in a few days. is it really bad for skin?especially under eyes...??

I would never ever put vaseline on my face, not anywhere - it might work for some - But vaseline is not a moisturizer it is a selant and will at best seal in the moisturizer you already have in you skin. At worst it can clog pores and seal in bacteria which can cause infection. If you want to prevent wrinkels I would suggest using an anti aging moisturizer instead of vaseline.

It makes me feel like it has added moisture but then within like an hour it's even more dry😔 petroleum jelly is very bad for your skin.

For under eye, I use StriVectin eye concentrate. Great moisturizer and has been great at preventing fine lines from coming back.

For an anti-ageing moisturiser, I love Elemis marine cream. For under-eyes, I love Liz Earle daily eye cream :)

The reason why Beyonce's mother is #FLAWLESS is because she uses Vaseline on her face! She's come out n said it. I personally like light moisturizers cause I'm picky, but ayeee! all up to you. (:

I use vaseline as a makeup remover also...different ppl have their own opinions, but I think as long as your sanitary with it and not leave it sitting and a bacteria prone place your fine...but the main purpose of vaseline is to protect the skin of cracks and etc. so why wouldnt you put it on your skin? jus wondering...

Apparently if you use Vaseline too much your skin will depend more on the Vaseline to product moisture, Vaseline I believe is made with mineral oil (or some parts I'm not entirely sure) but mineral oil is bad for the skin. Everyone has their own preference so just depending on if it works for you

Vaseline is a petroleum byproduct, a type of grease that occurs in the process of refining petrolatum into fuels. It is an industrial sealant used primarily as a lubricant and sealant in plumbing and industrial applications to ease pipe fittings and prevent seepage/leaks. It was later marketed as a cheap skin product because industrial workers mistakenly attributed the petroleum jelly lubricant to skin softening effects (the reality is that it traps moisture against the skin, so any hydration is prevented from evaporating; hence, soft skin).

It is not an emollient, it does not moisturize. It is the opposite of a moisturizer: it is a humectant. It is a sealant! It traps moisture and prevents it from escaping. That is the entire purpose of this product. That is what it is designed to do. It is a lubricant (makes things slippery) and it is a sealant (stops things from leaking).

It does not prevent wrinkles. It is not a skin care product. In fact, it is a petroleum based product that contains many of the same basic compounds as the fuels we use to power our automobiles and industrial complexes. While these compounds are mostly refined out of the petroleum jelly, I highly doubt there is anything beneficial left by that process.

Petroleum products are sealants. They trap moisture and bacteria against your skin and your eyes. This makes them comedogenic, acnegenic, and at high risk of causing infection or blockage. You risk blocked tear ducts, impacted lash follicles, conjunctivitis, cystic acne, milia, and a variety of other issues. The jar packaging is unsanitary and easily contaminated as well.

Vaseline, petroleum jelly, whatever name it goes by: does not belong on skin for longer than a few minutes at most. It serves limited purposes, primarily as an adhesive remover or a protective barrier, and otherwise causes more problems than what it is worth. It is cheap, worth having on hand to fix a leaky faucet, but not the miracle that people claim want.

Wow. brief info. thanks  Emily.

Just to clarify what I mean by adhesive remover or protective barrier: in SFX makeup, Vaseline is used to break down latex prosthetics that are adhered to an actor's hair/eyebrows (accidents happen) because petroleum eats latex, and some professions use petroleum to protect exposed skin from exposure to chemicals when protective equipment has gaps (I used to use Vaseline on the gaps between my goggles and respirator when working in a particular lab).

I DON't mean slather it on your eyes to take off eyelash glue, or to use it in place of a lotion.

Traps moisture =/= moisturize. Prevent evaporation =/= hydration. Use a proper lotion. Leave the industrial products on the pipe fittings.

There are a lot of different opinions on using patroleum jelly on your skin. It is too thick to clog pores but it has no moisturizing benefits. However, if you use it in conjunction with other products it will work as a shield, holding that product in your skin and allowing it to absorb more.

Vaseline/petroleum jelly is very occlusive. You can use it to block areas while doing a peel or microdermabrasion. It will not penetrate the skin or moisturize. The skin underneath your eye is very thin and needs a cream specified for eyes to penetrate, as the molecules are much smaller and easily absorbed. Vaseline is a much larger molecule and can sit on top of the skin to aid in driving the eye cream down further. This goes for facial moisturizers too.
