I'm really interested in making lipstick from scratch as gifts for friends (and myself haha). I'm not comfortable with purchasing chemical preservatives or emulsifiers, and instead want to take a natural approach, with no harsh chemicals or preservatives. I was looking into fermented radish root as a mild antibacterial to help prolong shelf life...but how long would shelf life for natural lip products even be? I've seen 6 months - a year, and that just doesn't sound possible without any sort of preservatives.

It will be the shelf life of whatever spoils first in your ingredients. For example, If you use filtered water, a week tops.

So basically, the shelf life itself won't be the issue, but the buildup of bacteria still poses a problem.

If you need any inspriation I really record looking up 'Ella gale a diy life' on YouTube she does heaps of her own cosmetics and she usually tells you how long they last for

Well with lipstick it's easy to sanitize, so I'd still go with whatever spoils first, and sanitize it every few weeks. But if you Google something like "how long does it take for bacteria to build up in_____" you'll get good answers. Like filtered water grows bacteria after a week in the fridge. Unfiltered water should be thrown out in a day or two.

I think that's a really fab gift idea:) Ela Gale is a good one to watch, but I'd stick to making lipsticks. Definitely wouldn't make anything that goes around the eyes. DIY face/lip masks/scrubs (that are safe!) would be a pretty good gift idea too.
